Hi Jay,
I too blame MS word first, but if Calligra Words whose native format is
ODF is showing it the same as MS word, where do i go from there. There
was also problems opening Calligra Words files in LibO, which i have
reported as bugs, but dont know whether i should blame Calligra or LibO.
If the file is valid ODF according to the validator then you have to blame
LibO. Both LibO and AOO are pretty rigid sometimes and don't accept perfectly
valid ODF input. I have found this especially to be the case when the writing
application (e.g. Calligra) doesn't specify all formatting options even when
they are not used.
According to the validator, these were the only errors from my most
recent test files:
Word 2010 (odf 1.1)
Error: The file 'mimetype' shall not be listed in the
'META-INF/manifest.xml' file as it does not exist in the ODF package
'Xiamen_Tungsten_Group_unifies_enterprise [odt].odt'!
Error: The file 'META-INF/manifest.xml' shall not be listed in the
'META-INF/manifest.xml' file as it does not exist in the ODF package
'Xiamen_Tungsten_Group_unifies_enterprise [odt].odt'!
Word 2013 (odf 1.2)
Error: element "manifest:manifest" is missing "version" attribute
I work on Calligra myself and where I found the most problems of this case was
with charts but I'm sure there are other cases too. I just cannot come up with
them from the top of my head.
With my testing, the biggest problem i've found is with tables being
crushed flat when opening Calligra saved odf files in LibO. Please do
have a look at this bug report for further details of
this:https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=77855
Anyhow - thanks for your work ! hopefully it results in some good
improvements over time.
Its been my pleasure. 43 bugs and counting, mainly just compatibility
issues and a few crashes.Wish i could send in more enhancement
suggestions, but i dont use office suits. :)
This type of testing is very interesting. I would be very grateful if you
could also report any bugs you find in Calligra when you test that.
Initially i was testing calligra but found that it had quite a bit of
problems with opening docx and could only save to odf, which meant
testing calligra would be quite limited as i'm testing docx strict, docx
transitional, doc, odt 1.1, odt 1.2, odt 1.2 extended, and rtf, so i
recently dropped it from my tests. Here are the tweet results of my
first 3 tests where i tested calligra, as well as links to all the files
used in the tests.
test1:
http://www.microsoft.com/investor/downloads/events/Credit_Suisse_2013_Technology_Conference_Terry_Myerson.docx
test1: @calligrasuite reduce it to 8 pages due to paragraph line
spacing, but reopened odf successfully
test1: @calligrasuite removed dashes on multiple pages like at "terms of
getting -- our"
test1: opened @calligrasuite docx to odt in @libreoffice and it opened
successfully
test1: opened @libreoffice docx to odt in @calligrasuite and it came out
perfectly
test1: opened @libreoffice docx to rtf in @calligrasuite had incorrect
page size, all '--' were removed, and size of double spaces was off
test1: opened @libreoffice docx to doc in @calligrasuite, size of double
spaces was off, '--' visible but have extra padding to the right
test1 results @calligrasuite: B- for acceptable display, good opening of
conversions, and good opening of other conversions

test2:
http://www.microsoft.com/investor/reports/ar13/docs/2013_Annual_Report.docx
test2: @calligrasuite has the .docx set at 109 pages, it displayed 1 of
3 images in the file and the pdf had 0 images
test2: @calligrasuite text paragraph spacing is off, there are problems
with table text spacing and separators
test2: @calligrasuite reopened the converted odf file successfully, but
still with all the same problems
test2: opened @calligrasuite odf in @libreoffice and it has 382 pages as
the tables were crushed and only the first image showed up
test2 results @calligrasuite: D for acceptable display but corrupted
images, perfect opening of conversion, but saved odf not good in LibO

test3:
http://download.microsoft.com/documents/rus/microsoft4you/How_to_license_the_operating_system_Windows_8_new.docx
test3: @calligrasuite wasnt able to show first page document title, had
incorrect page size, and no footers - http://img.ly/yFwK
test3: @calligrasuite reopened the converted odf file successfully
without changes
test3: opened @calligrasuite odf in @libreoffice and it has 24 pages as
tables are crushed flat and first page document heading is missing
test3 results @calligrasuite: B for acceptable display of document text
but not of document title, headers, and footers

I wouldnt mind adding calligra back to the tests if i could email my
findings to someone in calligra (which i'm currently doing for kingsoft
office), as filling LibO bug reports and follow up is taking quite alot
of my time, and initially it wasnt my intent to file bugs. Personally i
think that we should all back one library for the import and export of
office documents in order to reduce duplication of efforts. This would
speed up improvements to the library and eliminate compatibility issues
between FOSS office suites, so apps can differentiate themselves with UI
design and functionality. I'm assuming that might not always be possible
due to licensing issues.
ATB,
Michael.
